Holiday Happenings at High Peak

Posted by The Pastor on November 22, 2008

Thanksgiving is less than a week away and Christmas is right around the corner.  So here are a few of the upcoming holiday events at High Peak Baptist Church

Sunday Night Services Moved to 6:00 PM – Our Sunday evening worship time is at 6 PM till January.  This is a trial run and we will make the official decision in January during the second Sunday night service.

International Missions Celebration – Sunday Night, Nov. 30th at 6 PM.  We will have a class for all ages including Nursery, Children, Youth, and Adults.  We will study missions and specifically learn about the Miao People group of China.  Starting at 6 PM we will have a guest speaker who will share some history of the Miao people.  Mrs. Yang is on staff at Valdese Elementary and is Hmong herself.  The Hmong people in our area have their roots in China before they went to Laos.  At 6:30 we will enjoy some Chinese/Hmong food and then at 7 PM finish with our group studies for about 30-45 minutes.

Christmas Social – Our annual Christmas social will be Sunday Night, Dec. 7th at 6 PM.  Bring some food and enjoy the meal.

Children’s Christmas Program – The children will present their Christmas program during the morning worship service on Dec. 14th at 11:00 AM.

Adult Christmas Program – The adult choir will perform their Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 14th at 6 PM.

Lottie Moon International Missions Offering – During the month of December we will be collecting the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions.  There will be an aisle march during the Sunday Morning worship services at 11:00 AM on Dec. 14th and 21st.  Here is a video from some missionaries that will be supported by this offering.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Service – On Christmas Eve at 6 PM we will have a candlelight communion service.

New Year’s Even Fellowship – On New Year’s Eve at 7 PM we will have a fellowship at church with food and fun.  This is for all ages and you will have time to go to your family celebrations after the meal if you want or stay for more fun at the church.

There will be no activities at High Peak on that Sunday and Wednesday. To get there take Exit 103 on I-40 and go south (left if coming from High Peak) and Walker Road is on the left about a half mile. The services will start at 7 PM each night.

Best English Translation

Posted by The Pastor on September 20, 2008

Sometimes church members ask me what is the best translation to use.  For a short answer I like the Holman Christian Standard Bible for readability and understanding and the English Standard Version for study and accuracy.  The King James is good if you like to read your favorite passages in the version you most often hear them.  John 3:16 just doesn’t sound right unless it is KJV.

However, it helps to know more about them.  So go and read this to learn more about which translations are best and how you can choose your own based on the basics listed in the article.

Finally, the best translation is the one you will read and understand.  So go to a Christian book store and read through a few of your favorite passages and see which one you like.  Read John 3, Psalm 23, and Matthew 27-28.

Fireproof

Posted by The Pastor on August 30, 2008

A new movie called Fireproof is coming out on Sept. 26.  Right now it is only scheduled to be shown in Hickory, but I’d like to see it in Morganton as well.  It is a movie by the creators of Facing the Giants.  You can watch the trailer for the film below.  Also contact the local theatre if you want to have this movie come to Morganton!  Click that link and it will open a new window or tab and you can insert Mimosa Cinemas and request that they bring Fireproof to Morganton.

Last Outdoor Movie Night

Posted by The Pastor on August 25, 2008

This Friday at 8:30 will be our final Outdoor Movie Night.  We will be watching the movie below.  Bring your own snacks, drinks, friends and seats.  If it rains we will move inside the fellowship and still watch the movie.

it is a fun film that is enjoyable for the whole family.  Kids will love it but so will adults!
