Just a quick note to all of our members. We are starting off our special study called For Parents Only (see the web site) this week. The purpose of this study is to help the parents of our church understand their kids and become better parents in accordance with Ephesians 6:4. I hope all of our parents will come and be at this study on Wednesday Nights in January and February. The book that this is based on is one of the most important books I’ve read as a parent. That is not hyperbole. I really mean that. It has helped me greatly and I wanted to share it with you. We will get an overview of the study this week and give out the book and the study guide.
We start at 6:30 this week. The reason is that we know many families have a hard time getting home in time to eat and then get to church. So at 6:30 we will have a meal. This won’t be a big church potluck. This week we are have soup and sandwiches. So come get a healthy, hot supper and learn how to relate to your kids.
The youth are also taking part in a similar study. The guys are studying For Guys Only which will help them better understand themselves, their parents, and girls. The girls are study For Girls Only which will do the same for them – help them understand themselves, their parents and guys.
We will also have regular Children In Action and a nursery.
If you have friends with kids, let them know about this great study!!
Last night our deacons met and discussed and finally approved the official formation of a Prayer Room. They decided that the current library is in fact the best place for it for the following reasons.
It is close the sanctuary and would be easy for people to stop off and pray before service or during service
If someone makes a decision during the service it would be easy to get to for counseling and further prayer
If someone is praying at the altar and needs extended time of prayer, then a friend or family member or just another concerned member could come forward and ask that person if they would like to go to the prayer room to pray together.
There may be other good reasons. Previously that room was serving as our library with a lot of very good (and sadly some very outdated) resources. I am thankful to those who have been working hard to make the library a useful tool. Sadly, few were actually using it. So, I asked that the books be moved. It was suggested that we move them to various locations in the church. That is what is being done with help from our youth.
At the top of the stairs going down to our basement, there is a bookshelf where some of the best and newest books will be placed. Stop and look. If you find something of value, then check it out and read it and please return it. In the children’s area we will be putting children’s books. Videos will also be distributed based on their content. We ask that you use the resources and return them. Many people gave them to our church in memory or honor of someone special. Not using them would be sad. Not returning them after use would also be very sad.
Once the prayer room is up and running, we will explain some of the great things that it will contain. Until then, just pray that God will use both our new prayer room and the books from our old library to help grow the people of High Peak!
Here we go! Vacation Bible School 2009 is about to start this Sunday night. Actually, the congregation will get a preview of the Adult VBS study during our morning worship service. The adults will do a 6 part study on “Boomerang Believers” – What Goes Around Comes Around for Good and Bad!
Of course there will be classes for all ages and supper each night at 6 PM. After supper we will all go to our classes with they children and youth leaving the fellowship hall and the adults staying in the fellowship hall. Adult VBS will start about 6:45 each night and run till about 8:15.
There will be lots of fun and learning. If the kids have a great weak and raise lot of money for our mission project (a local food kitchen) then there will be a pie in the face of either the pastor, Barb Purcell, Mandy Hice or Dennis Hamrick, our music leader.
The youth took a mission trip to Hendersonville, NC and did work with an organization called Service Works. They partner churches with people in need. Usually this is some kind of house repair or light construction duties. Our youth helped to fix up a family’s home which had been condemned. This would have resulted in the family being put out and likely homeless. And now they won’t be.
March 15 we will be hosting our second annual youth worship event for the teens of our area. This year’s theme is Generation Y focusing on the themes from James 2:17 which talks about putting your faith in actions. Many people call the younger Generations in our country Generation X. I am one of the earlier members of that Generation. Some have labeled the children of GenX Generation Y. But they are asking more than ever the question “Why?” Why do you believe in God? Why can’t I do whatever I want? Why do I have to abide by the rules of society?
We want to help our youth know that they are loved by a God who sent his son to die for them. And if they will believe in Him, they can have a great life and hope of an afterlife. But that great life comes with a responsibility to live out their faith. So Generation Y will challenge them in this area.
We’ve invited back Robby Kropiwnicki to speak to the youth. He did a great job and really had the kids listening to his exciting testimony. Also we have invited the popular band Caleb’s Faith. They are a band that really knows how to get the attention of youth as they sing the Gospel. We will also be serving pizza before and after the event.
The time is 5:00 pm on March 15th at High Peak Baptist Church!
