Vacation Bible School for Adults

Posted by The Pastor on May 30, 2008

Each night of Adult VBS we will be dealing with stories about faith.  The water theme comes from our VBS.  The five stories demonstrate how God has taught us to be people who live by faith.

The stories for each night are as follows:

Sunday - Noah’s Flood.  Water both saved Noah’s life and was God’s means of judgment on a sinful earth.

Monday - Crossing the Jordan.  Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River.  Before they could cross they had to take a step of faith and walk into the water’s edge.  We have to take steps of faith before God blesses.

Tuesday - Jonah.  He ran the wrong way and God used a Whale to both save him from himself and judge him for his sins.  God’s work sometimes is painful but the end result will always be for our best.

Wednesday - Peter Walks on Water.  He took a step of faith but then took his eye off Christ and sunk.

Thursday - Jesus Tells Disciples to Go Out Into the Deep.  He is telling us to do the same as we fish for men.

Online Bible Software Suite

Posted by The Pastor on May 11, 2008

Want to study the Bible but don’t want to buy expensive software or download a large program and install it?  Well, I just found a web site that will let you do online bible research called Bible Software Tools, published by Christianity.com.  These bsthave been available for quite some time.  You will find links to the right.  But Christianity.com has a software suite that is more comprehensive.  It has almost all of the major translations, a decent set of reference titles, and some nice articles and spiritual helps.  You can also do bible reading and devotions.  The commentaries are not the best or most up to date, but they are very good.  If you would like to learn more about it I have posted a brief overview on my site.

Are We Getting Smaller or Bigger?

Posted by The Pastor on May 8, 2008

Recent reports say that for the first time our denomination is actually getting smaller.  The truth was that we have been a lot smaller than we are.  (See this article quoting Southeastern President Danny Aiken) What I mean is that despite the fact that the SBC claims more than 16 million members, we are far smaller than that.  Why?  Because churches usually have many more members on their roll than they really have actively invovled.  For example High Peak Baptist Church claims nearly 400 members.  But if we had half that in our Sunday service we’d feel like we were being overrun on that day.  We are not that big.  So how big is the SBC.  If all of the other churches have the same percentage we do, then it is likly more like 8 million.

So what do we do about it?  For our part we need to be honoest about who we have.  If you are a member of our church but have not been here in ages, come.  Be honest and act like a member by showing yourself.  We’d love to have you back.  If you know someone who is a member but doesn’t come, call them or write to them.  Tell them we are desperately looking for our members.  We need them.  Tell them to come home.  Finally, we may need to get lean but cutton off some drag.  If we cannot find them, don’t know where they are and haven’t seen them in years, then it is time to let them go.

What do you think?  Hit the comments button and post one below.  If it asks you to register then do so.  And realize that comments will have to be approved before they show up. This is only to keep unsavory links to adult sights and the like off our page.

Free Coffee and Donuts for Voters

Posted by The Pastor on May 6, 2008

Today is election day.  For all voters and poll workers we are providing free coffee and donuts.  We are not currying favor for a candidate - just showing the love of Jesus.  So instead of a cup of cold water in Jesus name, how about a cup of hot coffee and a Krispy Kreme donut?

In the afternoon it may become free coffee and cookies.
