How it all started...
In late 1934, Mrs. Maggie Coffey from Antioch Baptist Church had a vision and saw a need concerning the High Peak Community. In that same year Rassie and Katie Rector and some close neighbors began hosting Sunday School in their home on Sunday afternoons. In January of 1935, Mrs. Coffey walked from house to house during a winter snow and discovered 93 people were not attending church anywhere. After a few weeks they discovered Mr. Joe E. Cooper had an old, abandoned house that he would allow them to use for Sunday School and preaching if they wanted to use it. On January 20, 1935, 24 people came together in that little house for what would be the first ever meeting of what is now known as High Peak Baptist Church. April of 1935 the first building was built. In a little less than six months those attending High Peak numbered 179.
Expanding the vision...
In 1937 the first story of the Sunday School building was built and by 1947 brickwas added and a second and third floor were built to extend the educational space. June 9, 1963 the current sanctuary/worship center was completed and ready for the first service. High Peak services consisted of Sunday School, Sunday morning preaching and Sunday evening training union, with a midweek mission emphasis and prayer meeting. High Peak is currently under the leadership of their ninth pastor, Rev. Shane Ramsey. The church has survived some ups and downs along the way, from membership transfers to withstanding COVID-19, and currently God is moving in ways like He did in the humble beginnings of the church.
